Grazing
the Net: Raising a Generation of Free Range Students
This article shows how schools may take advantage of the Internet to raise
a generation of "free range students" — young people capable
of navigating through a complex, often disorganized information landscape
while making up their own minds about the important issues of their lives
and their times.
Seeking
Common Ground: Our Conflicting Viewpoints about Learning and Technology
This article addresses five topics: (1) the conflict between our belief in
intellectual property versus our belief in the freedom of information; (2)
the conflict between the individual and the collective; (3) the conflict
between just-in-time learning and "plenty-of-time" learning; (4)
the debate over whether instructional design is an art or a science; and
(5) the issues of equality and diversity in educational research and practice.
Perspectives
/ Follow the Children?
The obstacles to effective computer use in the classroom are many,
including lack of resources, training, and time—and sometimes, the
curriculum itself. In addition, although most teachers are convinced that
teaching kids the technology of the day is crucial, the dilemma about which
kind and what degree of computer usage are most effective remains unsolved.
